The Way Forward

March 2021 Update

The application to build houses on Owlthorpe Fields was rightly rejected by Sheffield councillors in June 2020.  But now this decision has been overturned by the Decision of the Public Inquiry. Updatw

OAG has begun the process of a Planning Statutory Review, and a Crowd Justice Funding Page to fund it - you can see more details on the News & Events Page.

While we work on the Review we also continue to work with Dr Patrick Harrison, The Friends of Waterthorpe Park and others, on an alternative way forward for Owlthorpe Fields...

As we see it the choice is simple:

  • Cram in more houses
  • Cause more traffic congestion and pollution
  • Increase pressure on GP surgeries
  • Increase pressure on local school places
  • Force wildlife into ever smaller areas or die
OR
  • Protect this land for the health and wellbeing of our communities
  • Improve educational attainment
  • Mitigate flood risk downstream
  • Improve air quality
  • Save trees, hedgerows and wildlife

Dr Patrick Harrison is a lecturer in bio-chemistry at Hull University, was brought up in Waterthorpe, and still lives locally. His focus is on engaging young people with nature, and developing an understanding of the science underpinning it.

He’s proposing a wildlife corridor linking Owlthorpe Fields in the West through Waterthorpe Park to Beighton Ponds in the East – an open green place for health, relaxation and education - in short, a community asset to be valued and treasured.
